200 cops to be deployed in Baguio's lantern parade, Christmas tree lighting today

Updated: Dec 1, 2022

Baguio City, Philippines - The official lighting of Baguio City's Christmas Tree and lantern parade afternoon of Dec. 1 is expected to attract big crowds. As a contingency plan to avoid crowd crushes, 200 police personnel are set to be deployed.

Crowd management strategy is to be implemented by the police force, relayed the Operations Division Chief of Baguio City Police Office, Lt. Col. Domingo Gambican. Part of the plan, he added, is to ensure public security and safety.

Saint Louis University marshals and personnel of the Public Order and Safety Division, including the members of force multipliers, are to further support the police team.

In a statement, Gambican warned the community, especially those planning to attend the traditional event, to be extra cautious of their valuables. Those with children are advised not to let them out of their sight to prevent untoward incidents they may face.

As for the schedule, Baguio Tourism Office said the Christmas music by Saint Louis University Marching Band starts at 4:00 p.m. and the lighting program and ceremony at 5:30 p.m. at Upper Session Road, to be immediately followed by the Lantern Parade going down Session Road to Harrison Road and proceeding to the culminating program at Melvin Jones Grandstand.

The grand tradition others are looking forward to was suspended for two years with the strike of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
