Cagayan, Philippines – The 24-year-old man who suffered a spinal cord injury when the Piggatan Bridge in Alcala collapsed earlier this month will receive zero billing from the Cagayan Valley Medical Center (CVMC), where he was treated.

The 24-year-old was among the individuals passing through the 45-year-old Piggatan Bridge when it gave way due to the combined weight of four trucks on October 7. The bridge, constructed in 1980, was only retrofitted in 2016 with a funding of ₱11.7 million—a meager budget, according to DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon.

Seven men were reportedly injured in the incident, including the 24-year-old, who sustained “multiple physical injuries secondary to a vehicular accident, with possible spinal cord injury.” He was brought to CVMC, where he is currently receiving treatment and undergoing several tests.

As he continues to receive medical care, the Department of Health (DOH) assured that he will not pay anything, as the agency will cover all his medical expenses through its Zero Balance Billing program.

“Sinisiguro ng DOH na walang babayaran ang pasyente sa tulong ng Zero Balance Billing mula sa kanyang admission, laboratory tests, at iba pang kinakailangang serbisyong medikal,” the DOH stated.
