Baguio honors sacrifice of “Principal Hero” who saved a drowning child

Baguio City, Philippines - The late Principal of Bakakeng Elementary School, Dr. Brigette Y. Galong, has etched an enduring legacy in the heart of the City of Baguio.


Mayor Benjamin Magalong recently solidified the city's profound condolences for her untimely passing through the ratification of City Council Resolution No. 775, series of 2023. The resolution not only expressed the city's deepest sympathies, but also commended Dr. Galong's heroic act, that ultimately led to her tragic demise.


Born on December 26, 1968, in Bokod, Benguet, Galong dedicated her life to the noble cause of education, becoming a shining beacon of inspiration for both her students and colleagues. Her impact extended far beyond the conventional boundaries of academic achievement.

Ascending to the role of school principal on Aug. 10, 2015, Galong not only fulfilled her administrative duties with distinction but also earned respect as an esteemed educator. Her influence reached far beyond the realms of traditional academic boundaries, as she imparted invaluable skills and values that became fundamental to the personal growth and development of the young minds she nurtured.


On Dec. 8, 2023, Galong's life was cut short during an act of unparalleled heroism in Bauang, La Union, where she fearlessly sacrificed her own safety to save a drowning child.


The City Council Resolution, as conveyed by the Public Information Office, underscores her extraordinary bravery and compassion, emphasizing how these qualities mirrored the values she tirelessly instilled within the school community during her tenure.


"Her legacy as an educator, mentor, and leader will forever resonate within the halls of the institution she served," the resolution states.

Galong's unwavering commitment to the betterment of students' lives and her profound impact on the education system are recognized with deep gratitude and respect. Her legacy, stretching far beyond the halls of Bakakeng Elementary School, challenges the people of Baguio to embody the same dedication and kindness she exemplified.


The resolution concludes with a heartfelt wish for her family to find solace in the knowledge that Galong's legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched.
