Tabuk City, Kalinga – During the Send Off and Installation Program of the Principal in Gaang Elementary School in Tanudan, Congressman Allen Jesse Mangaoang reminded teachers in the province to continue inculcating cultural heritage in their lessons to help preserve traditions and cultural values.

Mangaoang relayed his message to educators through his representative Fernando Cosidon who attended said event on January 14, 2022.

The congressman, in his keynote message, recognized the major role played by the teachers in transmitting culture to society given their profession thus, they should not fail to integrate the cultural values especially the ‘Paniyaw, Bain, and Ngilin’ (PNB) which serve as the core guiding principles of the yKalingas.

‘Paniyaw,’ he explained, means the restriction of immoral acts that constitute punishments from ‘Kabunyan’ or the God of people in Cordillera, including Kalinga, whereas, ‘Bain’ is interpreted as feeling shame refers to proper attitude or respect towards other people.

Ngilin,’ on the other hand, is the adherence to taboos regarding social and economic activities. This includes compliance with certain rituals to protect oneself and members of the family from illness or harm.

According to Mangaoang, these core values that dictate the way of life of yKalingas should be passed to the next generations and teachers have big part in its realization.

“Gapu ta dagitoy mamaestra ken mamaestro a maikonsidera nga unsung heroes ket isu ti maysa a banwar iti maysa a successful nga studyante…ket itultuloy da ladta kuma a mangipaspasagepsep, mangipakpakaawat kadagiti studyante dagiti kultura ken nainsigudan nga ugali,” underscored the congressman.

Mangaoang further assured that as the Chairperson of the Philippine House Committee on Indigenous Cultural Communities and Indigenous Peoples, he remains steadfast in pushing measures for cultural protection and preservation.
