Tabuk City, Kalinga - With the provision of PhP661,100 worth rice milling equipment from the Department of Science and Technology-CAR through the Department of Science and Technology-Kalinga (DOST-Kalinga), the Galdang Gimpong Organization of Pasil will soon be milling quality brown rice.

The farmer organization is a beneficiary of the project under the DOST Local Grant-In-Aid which aims to harness the country’s scientific and technological capabilities by providing financial grants. The project is realized through partnership with LGU-Pasil, DA-CHARMP, DTI-Kalinga and DPWH-Upper Kalinga District Engineering Office for the transportation support.

The Galdang Gimpong Organization is a group of long time heirloom rice or brown rice producers. The group later decided to level up and upgrade to milling and packing their own products.

DOST-Kalinga chief Jasmin Donaal relates that prior to the delivery of the equipment, a one-day training was conducted for the rice mill operators at Sabangan, Mt. Province on May 11.

Donaal said that together with DOST-Kalinga staff Engr. Allan Garcia, DOST-Mountain Province staff Minerva Dep-et, two operators, Mr. Ceasar Dawagan and Mr. Reagan Agagon and officer Ms. Delia Wail attended the training to further equip the operators and officers of the organization with skills and knowledge.

Douglas Paticawen, supplier and SETUPreneur, trained the 2 organization’s operators at his site not only to check the equipment, but to ensure that no problems will arise when the equipment is transported.

Paticawen required the trainees to operate the equipment perfecting every step of the way. At the end of the training, Donaal said the operators were able to mill all the rice and coffee with no wastes and stones. The equipment given to them is designed to separate the husk and stones.
