'Kennon Road open Friday to Sunday with strict safety conditions' -RDRRMC

Baguio City, Philippines – Kennon Road will be opened from Friday at 5 AM to Sunday, 5 AM for travelers going up to Baguio; and Sunday, from 5 AM to 12 noon for motorists going down to Manila, starting Nov. 26. This is according to the Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (Cordillera RDRRMC).

Said development came after Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong requested to open Kennon Road ‘to lessen traffic congestion at Marcos Highway’s quarantine checkpoint (QCP) and triage facility, which is being experienced during weekends attributed to the influx of tourists in the city.’

Cordillera RDRRMC and the Joint Inter-Agency Task Force Kennon (JIATF Kennon) following a joint inspection conducted on Nov. 20, agreed to open the road, but with strict safety conditions.

“In order to ensure safety in Kennon Road, we had a joint inspection with the core group members of JIATF Kennon last Saturday. During the same day, we laid out our preparations for border control, quarantine checkpoints, interoperability among members, and IEC program,” JIATK Chairperson Albert A. Mogol said.

He said that “all motorists or road users are reminded to observe the proper speed limit of 30 kph, driving safety precautions, parking, and traffic rules including the 5-ton limit, and in case of inclement weather or ground-shaking in the area, the road shall be closed immediately by the JIATF Kennon.”

Meanwhile, JIATF Kennon has formalized the agreement adopting the resolution, which includes safety conditions and health emergency readiness for strict compliance by the member agencies and the motorists. JIATF Kennon shall issue an appropriate advisory in case there will be changes.

Earlier, Kennon Road was closed to give the way for its rehabilitation and improvement project by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to prevent road slope disasters such as soil collapse, rockfall, and landslide that frequently occur along said road, which pose threats to travelers.
