Lubuagan, Kalinga - Municipal Health Office of Lubuagan has conducted free tuberculosis x-ray check-up on December 1, which aims to diagnose "missed" TB cases among the municipality's vulnerable population.

The initiative was made possible through the Advancing Client-centered Care and Expanding Sustainable Services for TB (ACCESS TB) program of the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) as funded by the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. The goal of the project is to help with the National TB Control Program’s mission to end TB in the country.

Angelite Tanding Duguiang, Municipal Medical Technologist, said beneficiaries for the free check-up were those showing symptoms of the tuberculosis disease like prolonged cough, loss of weight and appetite, night sweats, and those families with active TB patient members.

Duguiang said that at least 84 symptomatic patients were accommodated during the conduct of the one-day activity. The x-ray results have not yet been released as of press time.

Duguiang added that individuals who are prone to TB disease are those who have comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension, the elderly, and those with poor hygiene practices.

She said in order to avoid getting the disease, people should practice good hygiene and regularly consult with a doctor.

"Practice good hygiene like regular handwashing, avoid spitting anywhere, and wear masks especially nu symptomatic. If diagnosed with TB, consult the nearest facility immediately tapnu maikkan ti agas ken i-separate dagidiay mausar nga gamit like spoons, plates, towels, etc.," Duguiang said.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tuberculosis is affecting about one million Filipinos. Having the third-highest prevalence rate in the world, after South Africa and Lesotho, the Philippines records at least 60 Filipinos dying every day from said airborne disease.

Despite it being a highly curable disease, it is the number one killer among all infectious diseases.
