Piat, Cagayan – A 300-hectare international airport proposed to be established in Barangay Warat in Amulung and Barangays Villarey and Sto. Domingo in Piat is now being pushed, following a positive response from the community during a public consultation held on July 22, 2021.

Cagayan Provincial Information Office reported that with the success of the consultation, the inventory of those individuals and actual residents in the area, under the Agrarian Reform Program, shall now be given attention.

This is to identify who would be affected and who would get just compensation from the provincial government.

According to CPIO, Governor Manuel Mamba has previously announced that the provincial government will be paying the hectares of lands that will be utilized in the realization of the international airport but shall prioritize paying the loans incurred from the Land Bank of the Philippines.

“Kailangan munang unahing bayaran ang pagkakautang ng mga ito sa Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) at ang matitira ay siyang ibibigay sa benepisyaryo,” the report reads.

Benefits of the international airport

Governor Mamba and Piat Mayor Carmelo "Black" Villacete explained to the community the benefits of having an international airport, particularly to families residing in the area.

The international airport, the governor said, would greatly contribute in strengthening the local economy and would boost the tourism industry in the area. The campaign eventually gained a positive response.

Earlier, an ocular and technical inspection was made to the proposed site by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines in June 2017 through the directive of Department of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade.

Tugade also committed that he will request funding from the national government once the proposed project will pass the requirements set for establishing an international airport.
