Tinglayan, Kalinga—Ensuring that enough blood supply in the community blood bank is available during medical and emergency needs, the Municipal Health Office of Tinglayan is advocating the conduct of continuous bloodletting activities in the locality.

Municipal Health Officer Caren Liw-agan disclosed that the municipality’s blood supply is not enough, so they need to push for more bloodletting activity to guarantee the yTinglayan peoples’ free blood supply.

She said that people would usually resort to asking for blood from private entities when there is a shortage at the community blood bank.

Following the bloodletting in Barangay Butbut Proper on June 10, 2021, the same activity was held in Barangay Poblacion on Friday, June 25, 2021, where 500 cc blood was collected from each of the 19 donors who participated.

The LGU targets collecting blood from one percent of the total population of every barangay of Tinglayan.

Concepcion Osleg, a nurse in the municipality, said that there is a need for all barangays of Tinglayan to participate in the blood donation to sustain the supply, considering that the blood supply easily expires.

Blood, according to medium.com, can last for 42 days when stored in a refrigerator at a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius; platelets can last for five days, provided they are stored in platelet agitators set at a specified temperature; plasma is frozen and can last for an entire year.

Meanwhile, Municipal Information Officer Larae Lactao said that the LGU is planning a bloodletting event next month in Barangay Loccong, as she encouraged all physically fit individuals aging 18 to 60, male or female to join the activity.
