Tinglayan mayor gets first Sinovac jab to reassure constituents

Tinglayan, Kalinga – To persuade health workers to submit themselves for Sinovac inoculation, Mayor Sacrament Gumilab took the lead among the first 21 individuals who got the shot during the vaccination held on Thursday, April 8, 2021.

Municipal Information Officer Larae Lactao disclosed that the move of the mayor was promoted when only two from the municipality’s health workers signed and submitted their consent form to be vaccinated, despite being in the priority list for vaccination.

“When the mayor and the municipal health officer got their dose of the vaccine, it was then that the health workers decided to also take the vaccine,” Lactao informed.

In an interview with the mayor, he agreed to the decision alongside Municipal Health Officer Dr. Aite Caren Liw-agan, Chairman on Health, SB Bartholeme Aboli, and Vice Mayor Charlie Abay to assure his constituents that the vaccine is safe to take considering the advantage of being protected from the COVID 19 virus.

“The notion of the health workers is that the vaccination is an experiment, so together with my colleagues, we decided to get vaccinated first,” Gumilab said.

The decision, he said was also coordinated and approved by the Municipal Health Office and Department of Health-Kalinga through Dr. Remegio Basilan.

Meanwhile, Lactao cited the possible influence of the social media in spreading ideas about the negative effects of the vaccine instead of educating people on the advantages of vaccination. She said that people should be informed properly on the real purpose of getting vaccinated which is for protection, just like any vaccine.
