Tourism in Atok Benguet could reopen early this year

Atok, Benguet – Atok tourism in Benguet is one of those badly hit by the pandemic, and a plan by the Atok LGU is in the works regarding its possible reopening to invigorate the tourism industry in the area early this year.


On February 4 2020, Sarac suspended tourism activities in the municipality due to the health risks that COVID-19 virus posed to the public.

Mayor Raymundo Sarac has been reported explaining that the Municipal Tourism Council is working on rules and regulations for the possible reopening, in which he mentioned that they have invited farmers and others cultivating their land to transform them to agro-tourism sites as additional to places of destination in the municipality.


Sarac believes that the new destination for tourism in Atok shall be those in Pasdong Naguey, especially the part located near the Amburayan River where there are rice terraces, built by the community’s ancestors.

As of yet, the Municipal Tourism Council has not yet identified the tourism places to be opened first and the next ones which shall follow.


In the meantime, Sarac emphasized and reiterated that the rules and regulations imposed on the closure of tourism sites in Atok are still in place until there is new decision regarding their official reopening.


Tourism in Atok Benguet usually peaks during the coldest time of year between February and early March. The weather sometimes causes frost that draws tourists to the area.
