'We overcome malnutrition by working together' - Kalinga Gov. Tubban

Tabuk City, Kalinga – In the visit of Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles to Kalinga Province this September 25, 2021, Governor Ferdinand Tubban encouraged expectant mothers in the province to prioritize their nutritional needs and emotional wellness for their child to be born and grow physical and mentally healthy.


Tubban likewise pointed to the role of partnership with several agencies and private companies to end hunger and malnutrition.


Research point to the importance of the first 1000 days of development, and thus the focus on pregnant mothers.


The governor made the remark during the turn- over of the 1,887 essential food sets for the nutritionally-at-risk pregnant women in the province with Chairman of Zero Hunger Task Force, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles spearheading the activity.

Nutrition plus mental and emotional wellness necessary


Tubban advised the expectant mothers that good nutrition should not only be for their physical well-being, but should also nourish their mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness for their child to grow healthy and prepare them to achieve greater heights.


“Maikkan ti ustu a nutrisyon dagiti annak tayo idiay paylaeng uneg ti tiyan ta mamatiak isudan tu met laeng ti sumarunu a leaders tayo iti ili tayo a Kalinga ken Pilipinas,” the governor concludes.


Talking to all stakeholders, the governor stressed that since nutrition is an inter-sectoral responsibility, the Provincial Nutrition Council he said will continue to look for resources to provide for communities in need to achieve sustainable development goals by 2030.


As overseer of citizens’ problem, the provincial government had been consistent in implementing ‘health and nutrition policies to strengthen the social protection and enhance the knowledge of the community in their choices of food and beverages.

Pandemic worsened incidents of hunger and malnutrition


He said that the pandemic have worsened incidents of hunger and malnutrition ‘with many losing their jobs or livelihood, but with government programs and partnership with private companies, we can overcome these problems.’


As recalled, the Inter-Agency Task Force Zero Hunger (IATF-ZH) granted the provision of food sets as a respond to the request of Governor Tubban and Congressman Allen Jesse Mangaoang to address the dietary needs of several nutritionally at-risk pregnant women for 90 days to protect their unborn children from wasting and stunting during the first 1,000 days of a child.

Tubban, thanked IATF-ZH Chairman Nograles for said provision and for choosing Kalinga as one of the beneficiaries of Pilipinas Kontra Gutom program, which now ensures the nourishment of 1,887 pregnant women from the different municipalities and the city.


He likewise expressed gratitude to Nestle Philippines, and other private companies for delivering their products in the province.
