2 died, 3 injured after vehicle fell into 30-meter ravine in Bontoc

Mt. Province, Philippines – Two minors died while three others sustained injuries after a vehicle fell into 25 to 30 meter-deep ravine at 10:10 PM of June 16, 2022 along Bawi, Barangay Gonogon, Bontoc, Mt. Province.

Police investigation revealed that the victims were aboard a gray Tamaraw FX and were heading home in Sabangan from Bontoc when the driver fell asleep, causing the vehicle to fall into the ravine.

The fatalities were identified by the Municipality of Bontoc as Fausto Querido Ballakis Jr., 11, and four-year-old Nathan James Oloan Ballakis.

Those injured were Jeranie Querido Ballakis, 50; Fausto Langagan Ballakis Sr., 51; and Fernan Querido Ballakis, 18.

The victims were rushed to Bontoc General Hospital, but the two minors were declared dead on arrival.

The survivors were later referred to Luis Hora Memorial Regional Hospital (LHMRH).

The remains of Ballakis Jr. were brought to their residence in Sabangan, while Nathan’s body was brought to Samoki.

Enjoining the families in prayer, Bontoc Mayor Franklin Odsey directed concerned offices to provide necessary assistance to the victims.

The rescue teams that responded in the incident were Bontoc MPS, Bontoc Fire Station, Bontoc LGU personnel, Sabangan Bureau of Fire, Sabangan Municipal Police, Sabangan MHO, SAF personnel from Bugias, Benguet, the community and other volunteers.
