In a community where rice fields stretch across the landscape and farming remains a way of life, the annual Harvest Festival is more than a celebration of a successful harvest. It is a tribute to the men and women whose labor feeds families, sustains livelihoods, and keeps the community moving forward.

Recognizing farmers as the backbone of the barangay, Agbannawag Punong Barangay Alwing dedicated this year’s Harvest Festival on May 28 to the hardworking farmers who continue to sustain the community’s food supply. He emphasized the importance of gratitude, unity, and continued support for local agriculture.

The festival has been celebrated annually since 2015. This year’s celebration carried the theme “Rambakan ti Apit nga Ado, Panagyaman Bendisyon ti Apo,” highlighting thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest and the blessings received by the community throughout the year.

Despite being a one-day event, the festival featured a variety of activities, including a community dance, cultural presentations, and a parade that showcased local traditions and community pride.

In an interview with GURU Press Cordillera, Alwing shared that rice remains the barangay's primary agricultural product, while corn, vegetables, and fruits, particularly mangoes, also contribute to the local economy.

For Alwing, the festival is first and foremost a tribute to the farmers of Agbannawag, recognizing their vital role in sustaining the community.

“Pagyamanan tayo dagiti trabaho ken katatao dagiti farmers tayo—dagitoy mannalon ta isuda met ti mangitaktakder ti community tayo—dagiti supplies tayo. As a whole met, dawat tayo lang nga adda latta kuma ti panagtitinnulong ken pangkayakaysa tayo nga taga Agbannawag,” he said.

The message reflects the very heart of the festival. While the event celebrates the harvest, it also acknowledges the people behind every grain of rice, every basket of vegetables, and every fruit gathered from the fields. It is a reminder that the prosperity of the barangay is closely tied to the dedication of its farmers.

Alwing also underscored the barangay's commitment to supporting farmers through agricultural training and capacity-building programs. He shared that seminars from the City Agricultural Office focus on improving farming techniques and increasing crop yields, while extension programs from Kalinga State University provide additional training and technical assistance to local farmers.

These initiatives aim to equip farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to enhance productivity and ensure that agriculture remains a strong pillar of the local economy.

Beyond honoring agricultural achievements, the festival also highlighted the importance of unity among residents. Alwing shared a message from Governor James S. Edduba, relayed through Marco Pagtun, emphasizing that the essence of the Harvest Festival goes beyond farming and extends to the collective strength of the community.

“…from the governor met ket mayat piman diay message na nga ti essence daytoy fiesta mi ket diay kaadaan ti panagkaykaysa han lang a kas farmers nu diket kas bumaranggay.,” he said.

The one-day celebration gathered various stakeholders, including representatives from the Provincial Government of Kalinga and the City Government of Tabuk. Personnel from the Philippine National Police, the 1503rd Maneuver Company, Tabuk City Police Station Sub-Station 4, and the Bureau of Fire Protection also attended the event.

Among those who graced the celebration were barangay officials, residents, and religious leaders. As part of the thanksgiving activities, pastors from different Christian denominations, including the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, Assembly of God, Seventh-day Adventist Church, and Free Believers, joined the ecumenical gathering.

As the celebration concluded, barangay officials renewed their call for cooperation and unity among residents, expressing hope that the Harvest Festival would continue to inspire gratitude, strengthen community ties, and recognize the invaluable contributions of farmers to the development of Agbannawag.

More than an annual festivity, the Harvest Festival has become a symbol of appreciation for the people whose hard work sustains the barangay. In Agbannawag, every harvest is not only a blessing to be celebrated but also a reminder of the farmers whose dedication continues to nourish both the land and the community.
