Santa Marcela, Apayao – What began as innocent curiosity and child’s play turned into an unusual household incident after a young boy accidentally handcuffed his sleeping mother while playing with his father’s security equipment, prompting her to seek urgent assistance from authorities.

In a post by the Santa Marcela Municipal Police Station (MPS), the mother—whose identity was withheld—arrived at the station on April 29 with her wrist still restrained by handcuffs.

According to authorities, the mother was fast asleep at home when her child, out of curiosity, played with a set of security handcuffs believed to belong to his father. Without realizing the consequences, the child locked the device around his mother’s wrist.

Upon waking and discovering she could not free herself—and with no key available at home—the mother immediately went to the police station to ask for help. Officers promptly responded and carefully removed the handcuffs while ensuring her safety and comfort.

What to know about handcuffs

Most handcuffs are opened using a specific key, typically a standard universal handcuff key, and cannot be unlocked with ordinary keys or random objects—only with the proper key or authorized tools.

While handcuffs can be legally owned by civilians—often for security training, props, or collection—their legality may vary depending on how they are used or carried. Even if ownership is allowed, issues may arise when handcuffs are used to restrain another person without lawful authority or are carried in public in a way that suggests criminal intent.

As such, only authorized personnel, such as police or trained security officers, are permitted to use handcuffs as a restraint tool in the performance of official duties.

Authorities used the incident to remind the public to keep law enforcement equipment and similar items properly secured and out of reach of children.
