Benguet State University to open college of medicine next year


La Trinidad, Benguet – Following the groundbreaking ceremony of the College of Medicine building at the Benguet State University, the school is expected to offer medical courses starting next year.


The groundbreaking ceremony coincides with the 107th founding anniversary the said state university.


An official of the state university disclosed they will be accepting an initial number of 50 enrollees starting June 2024 to become the first medical students of the first state university/college in the region to open its college of medicine.

The college will then divide the group into two sections and undergo four-year training in the medical field.


On their fourth year in the college, it is then that they will have their clerkship at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center.


Classes are expected to start on August 2024.


“The proposal to offer the Doctor of Medicine program at BSU is BSU’s response to the evident need for physicians who are grounded in primary health care and are willing to serve at community level,” said Dr. Samuel Poliden, Vice-President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) during the ground breaking ceremony held at Cabanao, Balili, La Trinidad, Benguet.


To recall, the opening of the college of medicine was initially funded with a P45 million pesos from the Office of Senator Pia Cayetano through the efforts of Congressman Eric Yap.


The fund shall be utilized in the purchase of equipment for laboratory classes (P10M), furniture (P25M) and the hiring of personnel.
