Abra officials seek 30-day postponement of face-to-face classes

Abra, Philippines – Local chief executives in Abra are asking for the postponement of the face-to-face classes this school year supposedly to start this August 22.

Mayor JB Bernos, the League of Municipalities of the Philippines president, said they need at least 30 days for prepare for in-person learning as Abra is yet to recover from the destruction brought by the 7.0 magnitude quake.

Aside from the destruction of school properties, some learners and teachers are also currently facing psychological trauma from the tremor.

Abra’s request to postpone was forwarded as concerned departments in the province need to make repairs and preparations.

The request was made Thursday, August 11 during the visit of DILG Secretary Benjamin 'Benhur' in the province for the 'Interfacing with the Secretary of the Interior and Local Government (SILG)’ activity.

Resumption of face-to-face in August

The Department of Education earlier announced that despite the devastating effects of the earthquake in the Cordillera particularly, schools are still obliged to re-open on August 22.

Said schedule was set by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte.

Even with these reasons, DepEd Regional Director Estela Cariño stressed in a press briefing last week that the resumption of school reopening cannot be delayed by the department.

This, she said, is to make sure that DepEd would “still deliver quality education” in the face of the situation.

“So, whether the school is totally damaged, teachers are not psychologically ready, some learners are not psychologically ready, we will have to start classes by August 22, 2022,” stated Cariño in a press conference held last week.
