Aguinaldo, Ifugao – Recognizing the sacrifices of the solo parents in town, the local government of Aguinaldo, Ifugao reiterated their increased benefits under Republic Act 11861 or the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act.
Signed into law by former president Rodrigo Duterte on June 4, 2022, RA 11861 amended RA 8972 or the two decades old Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000 to promote the rights of Filipino solo parents and to ensure that they can receive adequate social protection programs from the government.
During the Municipal Solo Parents Assembly held on April 28 at the municipal gymnasium in Galonogon village, Atty. Beverly Marie Madchiw, Public Attorney II, reminded those who belong to the five categories of solo parents of the strengthened and expanded law.
Under the act, each solo parent earning a minimum wage and below is entitled to a P1,000 cash subsidy per month, provided no other cash assistance or subsidy from a government program is availed.
Also, they can avail of a 10 percent discount and Value Added Tax (VAT) exemption on baby’s supplements, including medical supplements purchased for children until the age of six, provided that the solo parent is earning less than P250,000 annually.
Further, solo parents are automatically covered under the National Health Insurance Program administered by PhilHealth.
In his inspirational talk delivered by Liaison Officer Ogie A. Potangna, Mayor Gaspar Chilagan Jr. commended the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office for initiating said event. He challenged all solo parents to remain firm, keep their faith and take refuge in God.
An open forum was likewise held for the concerns of the participants to be heard and consequently be attended to.
The event anchored on the theme, “RA 11861: Bagong Batas na mas Pinatibay, Kaakibat ng Solo Parent sa Tagumpay!”
