Baguio Midland Courier to take down Facebook page on Oct. 31

Baguio City, Philippines – After October 31, the page of the longest-running English community newspaper in Northern Luzon will no longer exist on Facebook.

Baguio Midland Courier (BMC) served the public with ‘Fair, Fearless, Friendly, and Free’ information until the 77-year-old paper folded in July 2024. Three months after it produced its last issue, the publication announced it would also be taking down its Facebook page.

The BMC FB page with 139,000 followers informed on Thursday, October 10, that it will deactivate on October 31.

“Due to the closure and cessation of operations of the Baguio Midland Courier effective July 22, 2024, we would like to inform the public that this official Facebook account/page of the Baguio Midland Courier will be taken down effective October 31, 2024,” Gloria Antoinette M. Hamada, the Hamada Printers & Publishers Corporation /Baguio Midland Courier Publisher and Chief Operations Officer announced.

The public can still access BMC’s previous issues at the Baguio City Public Library(1959-1969; 1971; 1973-1975; 1977; 1983-1987; 1989-2024) and the Benguet Provincial Library(1963-1968; 1973-1975; 1983; 1989-1994; 2006-2007; 2010-2024) after the publication turned over their hard copies to them.

Reels containing issues from 1947 – 2003 can also be reviewed through a microfilm viewer handed over to the Baguio City Public Library.

Further, online files will be soon available for free after the digital archiving of the print versions of the Baguio Midland Courier is completed.

“We deeply appreciate your support and engagement over the years. Maraming salamat po,” Hamada further wrote.

Meantime, Baguio City Librarian Easter Wahayna-Pablo thanked the BMC for the donation and noted that the city library is taking steps to ensure that the historical treasures will be easily available to the public.
