Butchering of pigs for Adivay’s ‘Grand Cañao’ pushes through amid threat of ASF

Benguet, Philippines – A merrier celebration of the month-long Adivay Festival is expected as its Grand Cañao, one of the most anticipated events of the festivity, will push through amid the threat of the African swine fever disease.

The opening of the festival will be on Nov. 06, while the Grand Cañao is slated for Nov. 23.

Cañao involves the sacrificing of animals, feasting, and dancing by Benguet natives. This is commonly performed for thanksgiving, healing rites, entertainment, or asking for a bountiful harvest.

In said activity, the provincial government of Benguet said 30 pigs and 2 cows would be butchered.

These pigs will be distributed per locality in the province and will be simultaneously butchered and cooked during the Cañao.

Governor Melchor Diclas assured the pigs that will be used in the activity are free of the viral disease, as these were raised by the Provincial Veterinary Office.

Said pigs will come from the province’s demo farm in San Pascual, Tuba, Benguet, where they were monitored and tested to see if they were infected with ASF.

For this year’s conduct of the festival, Diclas disclosed that the provincial government had allotted P6 million funding.

The celebration will revolve around the theme “Benguet: Gateway to Unforgettable Gateways,” which pertains to the tourism offerings of the province ready to be explored not just by locals but also foreign tourists.
