Tabuk City, Kalinga – Slain iKalinga soldier Captain Dean Oyando was honored with the Gold Cross Medal, one of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ most prestigious citations for gallantry in combat, during a vigil held for him at the Libingan ng mga Bayani on March 31, 2026.

Scout Ranger Oyando was killed while leading the 68th Infantry Battalion in a pursuit operation against members of the New People’s Army on March 29 in Monteclaro, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. The operation resulted in a 20-minute firefight with at least 15 NPA members, which claimed the young soldier’s life.

To honor his ultimate sacrifice for the Philippines and the Filipino people, the Philippine Army, on Tuesday, held a vigil for the fallen hero, where 2nd Infantry Division Commander MGen. Ramon Zagala awarded Oyando the Gold Cross Medal.

Meanwhile, Philippine Army Chief Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete earlier paid his respects to Oyando by personally visiting his wake and saluting him for his bravery and heroism.

Oyando’s body is expected to arrive in Tabuk City today, April 1.
