Baguio City, Philippines – Amid many allegations on social media, authorities say they are yet to establish the real cause of death of the grade 7 student who was found dead in a canal amid the heavy rains in Baguio City on Monday, July 28.

The City of Pines has been experiencing non-stop torrential rains since last week which led to cancellations of classes, but on Monday, the City LGU only initially extended its class suspension order from preschool to grade 6 amid the continuing effect of the monsoon. At around 12:59 p.m. on July 28, the City government, through its City Information Office, suspended classes from preschool to senior high school students.

On Monday evening, reports about a tragic incident involving a Grade 7 student broke out on the internet, with initial claims that the learner had slipped on the road due to the wet surface caused by the incessant downpour.

According to the police, as cited by DZWT 540 AM - Radyo Totoo, the body of the grade 7 student who was enrolled at a public school in Guisad, Baguio City was found by a citizen who was then cleaning a canal in front of their house to reduce the rising water level.

The citizen, upon discovering the body, asked for help from the security guard of the Bureau of Plant and Industry to get the student out of the water. They tried to revive the child, but it was to no avail.

Authorities believed the incident transpired around 1:00 p.m. on Monday, following the suspension of classes at the secondary level due to the inclement weather. The victim’s cause of death, however, is yet to be verified by the police amid claims that the child fell into the canal due to the slippery road.
