Tabu City, Kalinga – Kalinga Vice Governor Atty. Dave Q. Odiem urged the public not only to remember but also to live out the courage and sacrifices demonstrated by Filipino heroes as the country commemorates the 84th Araw ng Kagitingan.

In a statement this Thursday, April 9, Odiem stressed that the observance is a time to honor the endurance and bravery of veterans and individuals who fought for the country’s freedom—freedom that Filipinos continue to enjoy today.

He said that even a brief moment of reflection matters, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who endured hardship and offered their lives for democracy.

“Iti panangpadayaw iti naisangsangayan a kinaandur ken kinatured dagiti indibidual ken beterano a nakilaban iti wayawaya tayo, makikadua ti Opisina ti Bise Gobernador iti nasion a manglaglagip iti maika-84 nga Araw ng Kagitingan,” Odiem wrote.

The vice governor also urged the public to continue passing on the history and legacy of heroes to the next generation so that their sacrifices will not be forgotten.

“Iti daytoy nga aldaw, mangted tayo iti apagbiit a kanito a lagipen ken maparegta tayo iti tured ken sakripisio dagiti nakiranget para iti demokrasia tayo. Sangsangkamaysa tayo a laglagipen ti kinabannuar da ken ituloy tayo ti mangparegta kadagiti sumaruno a kaputotan,” Odiem said in a Facebook post.

Araw ng Kagitingan, or Day of Valor, is observed every April 9 to honor the bravery of Filipino soldiers, especially those who fought during World War II.

The commemoration recalls the “Fall of Bataan” on April 9, 1942, when more than 76,000 Filipino and American troops were forced to surrender to Japanese forces after months of defense despite being cut off from supplies and suffering from malaria, dengue, and starvation.

While it marked a military defeat, Araw ng Kagitingan honors the extraordinary resilience shown by the soldiers.
