TABUK CITY, Kalinga — The Provincial Government of Kalinga is considering a major shift in the concept of the 2027 Bodong Festival, proposing to transform the annual cultural celebration into a platform for peace, stronger community relationships and the transmission of Kalinga’s ancestral traditions to younger generations.

The proposal was presented by Provincial Planning and Development Officer Flordeliza G. Moldero during the Kapehan meeting at the New Conference Hall on October 5, 2026, as the province began early preparations for next year’s festival.

Moldero said the proposed concept seeks to move the Bodong Festival beyond a traditional annual celebration and develop it into a “living institution” that can contribute to peace and community development.

“I have few things in mind already. Like for instance, for 2027, if we can strengthen our celebration through yung shift from traditional practice na celebration lang siya. If we can strengthen siya into a living institution that would promote relationships, peace and community development,” Moldero said.

She said the proposed shift is particularly timely as Kalinga continues to experience tribal conflicts despite the annual observance of the Bodong Festival.

“Kasi itong nangyayari ngayon while we are celebrating the Bodong festival, we still experience tribal conflicts,” she added.

The proposed 2027 concept would also emphasize inter-generational transmission, or the passing of Kalinga’s ancestral knowledge, values and traditions from elders to younger generations.

Moldero said the festival could serve as a venue for strengthening unity among Kalinga communities while connecting younger generations with their cultural heritage.

She proposed incorporating into the festival concept the goal of connecting generations and transmitting ancestral wisdom to the present generation.

“…if we can include also sa concept din to strengthen yung uniting Kalinga. Yung connecting generations which should focus on inter-generational transmission from yung sa ancestral wisdom natin in to the present generation,” she said.

The Bodong Festival traditionally showcases Kalinga culture through indigenous songs, dances, practices, products and competitions, bringing together communities and visitors in an annual provincial celebration.

Under the proposed concept, however, the provincial government is looking at using the festival not only to showcase cultural heritage but also to reinforce the values associated with the bodong, the traditional peace pact system of the Kalinga people.

Moldero clarified that the proposals remain initial ideas for the conceptualization of the 2027 celebration and that the planning team will continue to gather recommendations from different sectors.

The provincial government is expected to conduct further consultations as preparations progress, with the proposed festival concept seeking to balance cultural preservation with the province’s current need to strengthen peace, unity and community development.

If adopted, the new direction would give the 2027 Bodong Festival a broader purpose—preserving Kalinga heritage while using that heritage as a tool to strengthen relationships among communities and promote peace among generations.
