Tabuk City, Kalinga― The Second confirmed COVID-19 co-morbid death was recorded in the province at around 6:30-7 AM on December 19, 2020, after a COVID-19 positive patient, employee of the Provincial Local Government Unit and assigned as driver at the Gabriela Mija Kim Medical Center, was found lifeless in his room while under admission at the center.

Doctors said the immediate cause of death (COD) is cardio-respiratory arrest. Antecedent COD is probable myocardial infarction and underlying COD is hypertensive cardiovascular disease. Other significant conditions contributing to death: hx of HPN, DM, kidney stone and MI.

Autopsy report showed that the possible time of death was between 2-3AM.

The patient did not exhibit any severe symptoms of the disease, but he has medical history of hypertension, Kidney Stones, and previously had a mild heart attack - a Myocardial Infarction.

It was reported that the 57 year old male patient from P4, Brgy. Agbannawag was a close contact of an index case. Together with 44 other staff at GMK, he was swabbed on December 16, 2020 due to exposure of a previous positive patient.

Swab results came out on December 18, 2020 and tested positive of COVID-19.

He was admitted at the Gabriela Mija Kim Medical Center on the same day.

Unfortunately, the patient was later found lifeless in his room by the nurse on duty who brought his breakfast after he failed to answer the door when the nurse knocked several times.

His remains were immediately buried at the Agbannawag Public Cemetery at around 5:00pm of the same day, following the proper management for COVID-19 death.

It can be recalled that the first CoViD-19 related death was recorded on November 09, 2020 with the passing away of a 53-year-old man who was an employee of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Kalinga.

He had been a close contact of a co-employee who was also found to be positive of the disease. It is said that the patient was suffering from diabetes and hypertension, and that he died due to complications triggered by the disease.

Governor Ferdinand Tubban, through KPLGU information office, once again reminds the public to be more vigilant and take the mandates of the Department of Health seriously in observing the minimum health and safety protocols. He reiterates that the community should be more responsible in their actions.

“The disease greatly affects people who are immune-compromised, the young and the aged. This coming yuletide season, let us not sacrifice or compromise the life of the others for a one time holiday celebration. Let us follow the government's health guidelines and save lives. Again, the officialdom of Kalinga deeply grieves for the loss of one PLGU Family member,” reads the statement of Tubban.

As of this writing, Kalinga has recorded a total of 585 COVID-19 cases, 176 of this are active while 407 have already recovered.
