Tabuk City, Kalinga – Following the announcement of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)–Kalinga that it will provide assistance to qualified tricycle drivers in the province, Governor James S. Edduba appealed to the agency to ensure that the distribution remains free from political influence.

During the Kapehan meeting of the Provincial Government of Kalinga on Monday, April 6, Social Welfare and Development (SWAD) Team Leader Lorna C. Lumioan disclosed that the DSWD is set to extend aid to tricycle drivers in the province to help ease the burden of rising fuel prices.

Lumioan clarified that beneficiaries will only be “registered and active” members of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA).

The DSWD official shared that a total of 1,185 drivers in Tabuk City will be the first to benefit from the assistance, with each receiving P5,000 under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) Program.

The list of beneficiaries was obtained from the City Business and Tricycle Franchising Office and validated last week. The distribution is scheduled on Wednesday, April 8, at the Tabuk City Gymnasium in Dagupan.

Drivers from the seven municipalities of the province will likewise benefit from the program, with coordination ongoing to identify qualified beneficiaries. The next payout is scheduled for April 16 at the Kalinga Astrodome.

Meanwhile, assistance for drivers of Public Utility Jeepneys (PUJs) and Public Utility Vehicles (PUVs) will also be provided in the coming days once the list of beneficiaries is submitted by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

While expressing gratitude for the initiative, Edduba raised concerns over possible politicization during the payouts. He appealed to the DSWD to refrain from inviting politicians in the province to speak during the distribution activities.

“Mabalin ban nga haan kayon ag-invite ti politicians during the pay-outs? Ta baka gamin manen dayta maiwaras ket kasla agbannag to manen nga kasla kua da. Haan kayo ag-invite politicians during the pay-outs ta baka agbalin manen nga kasla isuda aken ayuda kasi bawal met lang dayta under the Anti-Epal law,” Edduba said.

Responding to the governor’s request, the SWAD team leader assured that the agency will keep the distribution free from political interference, in compliance with existing policies, mandates, and laws.
