Rabies cases in Cordillera reached 114 over past 5 years, 10 new victims listed this year

Baguio City, Philippines - Despite efforts to eradicate rabies cases in Cordillera, new victims are still being recorded in the region.

The Department of Agriculture- Cordillera Livestock Division (DA - CLD), represented by Henry Gwyn Salasa, Veterinarian II, reported recently that a total of 114 cases of rabies were recorded in the region from 2019 - 2024.

Accordingly, 45 cases were recorded in 2019; 22 cases in 2020; 18 in 2021; 26 in 2022; 19 in 2023; and 10 new cases as of the first four months of this year.

The new cases were listed in the province of Abra with 5, and 5 in Ifugao.

Of the 5 cases in Abra, 3 were noted in Bangued, 1 in Lacub, and 1 in Bucay. In Ifugao, 2 were recorded in Kiangan, and 3 in Lagawe.

To address the problem, Salasa stressed that the easiest way to prevent rabies in dogs and cats is by vaccinating them as early as three months old.

Rabies vaccination is being offered for free once a year by the Office of the City/Municipal Agriculture, Provincial Veterinary Office, DA-Cordillera, and DOH - Cordillera.
