2 soldiers killed, 4 others injured by lightning strike in Kalinga

Lubuagan, Kalinga - The fate of two soldiers ended up tragically while they were out performing their call of duty at the boundary of Lubuagan and Pasil in Kalinga on Sunday, May 12, 2024.


Around 4:30 p.m. on said date, a team of troops from the 54th Infantry Battalion were conducting a security operation against the communist terrorist groups at the boundary of Western Uma, Lubuagan and Balatoc, Pasil.


At the time, a thunderstorm hit the area where a lightning bolt struck the troops which led to the instant death of two of the soldiers.


5th Infantry Division(ID) identified the casualties as Cpl. Andrew Monterubio of Gamu, Isabela and PFC Inmongog Aronchay of Sadanga, Mt. Province.


The lightning likewise injured four other soldiers identified to be Sgt. Dennis Bananao of Tanudan, Kalinga; PFC Melvin Danggalan of Paracelis, Mt. Province; PFC Abegil Awingan of Pinukpuk; and PFC Riel Angya of Pasil.


The 5th ID through its Commander MGen. Audrey Pasia, in a statement, condoled with the family of the deceased expressing, "My heart bleeds for them".


The division emphasized that the death of the two serves as an inspiration to the 5ID.


"Ang dalawang buhay na nasawi ng trahedya ay papalitan ng libu-libong sundalo na handang tanganin ang nabitawan nilang armas para ipagpatuloy ang sinumpaang ipagtanggol ang bandila ng Pilipinas at protektahan ang soberanya nito," 5ID wrote in a press release.
