Baguio City, Philippines – Human beings are not the only ones who seek cooler places amidst the El Niño phenomenon, snakes too.

Lately, there have been several posts by netizens about King Cobra sightings in Baguio City. Some were alarmed due to the reptile’s reputation of being fierce and aggressive, with the ability to deliver a neurotoxin enough to kill 20 people in one bite.

City Veterinarian Silardo Bested, as cited by the Baguio City Public Information Office, explained that the increased in visibility of snakes in the Summer Capital is due to the reptiles ‘migratory behavior.’ These creatures travel to look for cooler areas amidst high temperatures.

He added that among the reasons why snakes move out of their habitats include climate change, food sources, and the mating season.

While more snakes have been seen in the city recently, there have been no cases of bites reported.

The City Veterinarian reminds the public to the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources notify right away should they encounter serpents, emphasizing that killing one would only be justified if a person’s life is at stake.

Should they get bitten by the reptile, the public is advised to immediately seek an anti-venom shot from an animal bite center or the hospital.
