TUMAUINI, Isabela – A 30-year-old man lost his life after he was struck and subsequently run over by a passenger bus along the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Ugad, Tumauini, Isabela, in the early morning of June 23.

Police withheld the identity of the victim and referred to him only as "Anton," a resident of the said barangay.

According to the initial police report cited by local media outlets, the fatal incident occurred at around 5:10 a.m.

Authorities said a Florida Hino passenger bus bearing body number GD169 was traveling toward Cabagan when its 58-year-old driver allegedly failed to notice Anton, who was standing along the inner lane of the highway.

The bus reportedly struck the victim, causing him to fall onto the roadway before being run over by the vehicle.

Anton sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

Following the incident, the bus driver voluntarily surrendered to personnel of the Tumauini Municipal Police Station.

The bus involved in the accident was taken into police custody for proper disposition while investigators continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and any possible liabilities.

The incident adds to the number of fatal road accidents involving passenger buses recorded in Isabela in recent years.

In a previous incident, three people were killed and three others were injured after a passenger bus collided with a tricycle in Reina Mercedes. Authorities said the tricycle allegedly made a sudden U-turn, leaving the bus driver with little time to avoid the collision.

Another fatal crash was recorded in June 2025 in Barangay Malasin, San Mateo, where a 55-year-old man died and his daughter was injured after their motorcycle collided with a bus.

Authorities continue to remind both motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution and strictly observe traffic regulations, particularly along major highways where heavy vehicles frequently travel, to help prevent similar tragedies.
