‘They are stories, memories and legacies,’ – Gov. Edduba underscores importance of Kalinga’s Diddiga Tradition

Tabuk City, Kalinga – As the Province of Kalinga celebrates its 31st Founding Anniversary and 7th Bodong Festival, the vibrant Diddiga Cultural Parade and Showdown officially took center stage on February 12 at the Kalinga Sports Center in Bulanao, drawing contingents from across the municipalities to celebrate Kalinga’s rich heritage through music, dance, and ritual performances.

Addressing thousands of spectators, performers, and local officials, Governor James Edduba explained the significance of the tradition, emphasizing that the dances and rituals showcased in the event were more than colorful performances — they are living expressions of Kalinga’s identity, deeply rooted in tradition and strengthened by generations of shared history.

“Through the Diddiga Cultural Program, we proudly showcase the dances that embody our rituals and traditions — living expressions of our identity. From matrimonial rites that celebrate sacred unions and strengthen family ties, to hospitality rites that reflect our warmth and generosity — they are stories. They are memories. They are legacies,” he said.

In his message, Edduba also stressed the need to safeguard Kalinga’s heritage amid rapid modernization, adding that such traditions bind the iKalingas and serve as reminders that long before modern systems and institutions, it was culture that shaped the values, respect, and faith of the people.

Clad in intricate traditional attire, participants transformed the streets into a living canvas of culture, showcasing age-old practices that reflect the identity, unity, and resilience of the iKalinga people.

The parade commenced at the Rotary Marker, passing through the YKalinga Hotel, the Rotunda, and culminating at the Kalinga Sports Center, where the final showdown took place.

As the celebration continues, the Diddiga performance stands as a testament to the province’s enduring spirit, demonstrating that its culture remains not only alive, but also the very strength that unites its people.
