2 soldiers killed in Kabugao, Apayao clash

Kabugao, Apayao – Two soldiers were killed in a gun battle with Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) in Kabugao, Apayao on Thursday afternoon, August 18, 2022.

The gunfight transpired at the boundaries of Barangay Katablangan, Conner and Sitio Banan, Barangay Lenneng, Kabugao.

Provincial Director of the Apayao Provincial Police Office, Col. Reynaldi Ogay said there were about 30 armed rebels under Kilusang Larangang Gerilya North Abra against 15 men of the Scout Platoon of the 98th Infantry Battalion in the 5th Infantry Division.

The soldiers, Ogay related, were conducting their Focused Military Operation (FMO) when the encounter happened.

The gunfight resulted into the death of Second Lieutenant Nasser L. Dimalanes and Private First Class Jaime S. Fontanilla Jr.

Dimalanes was 28, a native of Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao, and a Muslim. He was commissioned on November 16, 2017 and was assigned in 98th IB as the Platoon Leader of Bravo Company.

Meanwhile, Fontanilla Jr. was 29, a resident of Luna, La Union. He entered the service on July 21, 2018 and was first assigned at Headquarters Service Battalion of the 5ID. He was then deployed in the 54th Infantry Battalion and later assigned in the 98IB.

Mourning the death of fallen comrades, Battalion Commander of the 98IB, LtC. Abraham M. Gallangi Jr. vowed to pursue the terrorist group ‘to let them pay the consequences of their inhumane actions.’

“We mourn the death of our fallen comrades who have sacrificed their lives in order to save the people of Kabugao…We will not put into waste the sacrifice rendered by our comrades,” guaranteed Gallangi through 5ID.

The number of killed or injured among the rebels are yet to be verified.
