20-yr.-old man in Cagayan takes own life after break-up with long distance girlfriend

Tuguegarao City, Cagayan - Emotional pain from a broken heart isn’t just a poetic expression—it can have serious, even deadly, consequences.

Studies have shown that intense emotional distress, such as that experienced after a romantic breakup, can lead to severe mental health issues and even suicide.  

Such a case was recorded in Claveria, Cagayan, recently, where a man took his own life after he and his long-distance girlfriend broke up. The identity of the victim was not disclosed by the police as requested by his family. 

According to Police Staff Sergeant James Caronan of the Claveria Police Station, in his interview with a local media outlet, the young man was discovered by his father hanging inside the barracks in Barangay Santiago on May 1, 2025, where he was working as a caretaker of a poultry farm. 

In their investigation, it was revealed that the victim suffered depression after his ex-girlfriend, whom he met online and had never met in person, rejected his pleas not to end their relationship. The woman is said to be from Leyte.  

Before committing suicide, the victim was seen drinking a lot until the incident happened, seemingly unable to cope with the pain of the breakup.  

The police officer added that the father believes that his son’s suicide was triggered by the said reason, as he read the recent conversation of the ex-couple, which he found on the young man’s phone.  

At present, authorities are continuing to look into the case to determine the real cause of the suicide.
