LAL-LO, Cagayan – A 40-year-old woman was rescued after she allegedly attempted to jump from the Magapit Suspension Bridge in Lal-lo, Cagayan, on July 2, prompting a swift response from authorities. Police said the woman is suspected to have been experiencing psychological distress.

The Magapit Suspension Bridge, a 257-meter structure spanning the Cagayan River, connects the eastern and western sides of Lal-lo and serves as one of the municipality's major transportation links.

In a video released by the Cagayan Police Provincial Office (CPPO), the woman, whose identity was withheld by authorities, was seen sitting on the outer railing of the bridge while officers from the Lal-lo Police Station (LPS) carefully approached her. The responding officers safely pulled her back onto the bridge deck, preventing what could have been a tragic incident.

According to LPS Police Lieutenant Lilet Lorenzo, as quoted by a local news outlet, police officers were conducting a routine patrol when two motorcycle riders flagged down their patrol vehicle and reported that a woman was clinging to the bridge's railings and was allegedly preparing to jump.

The woman was immediately brought to safety and later referred to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office for assessment and appropriate psychosocial intervention.

In the video, she appeared calm throughout the rescue operation. Unlike many similar incidents in which individuals may become hysterical or resist rescuers, the woman remained cooperative as police officers carefully guided and pulled her from the bridge's outer railing to a safe location.

Initial investigation indicated that the woman has a history of mental illness. However, authorities said she did not disclose the reason behind her actions or why she allegedly attempted to jump from the bridge.

Meanwhile, the Lal-lo Police Station reminded the public to immediately seek assistance from authorities or appropriate agencies if they know someone experiencing severe emotional or psychological distress. Early intervention, they said, can help prevent similar incidents and ensure individuals receive the care and support they need.

Authorities also encouraged people experiencing depression, overwhelming emotional distress, or thoughts of self-harm not to face their struggles alone. Reaching out to trusted family members, friends, mental health professionals, or emergency responders can make a crucial difference, as timely support may help save lives.
