59-yr.-old farmer drowns while crossing river in Manabo, Abra

Abra, Philippines – A 59-year-old farmer left his house to have his rice milled on Tuesday morning but was unable to return home after a tragic drowning incident.


The victim, identified as Carlito Balla, 59, a resident of San Ramon East in Manabo, Abra, reportedly went out on May 5, 2026, to have his rice milled. While on his way, he attempted to cross a river in Sitio Manago.


Witnesses told authorities that they saw the farmer struggling in the water, with his body briefly appearing and disappearing before he was eventually submerged by the river’s current.


Authorities were immediately alerted about the incident and launched a search and retrieval operation. Responders later found the victim beneath the water.


Balla was rushed to the Rural Health Unit of Manabo, where he was declared dead despite efforts to revive him.


Recent drowning data from the Philippine National Police revealed that 84 drowning cases were recorded in the country from March 21 to April 5, 2026.
