ITOGON, Benguet – Seven individuals, six of them from Mountain Province, were retrieved dead from a tunnel portal following a suspected gas poisoning incident on Wednesday late evening, September 30, 2026, in Itogon, Benguet.

The six victims who are from Banaao, Tadian, were identified by the Mountain Province Provincial LGU as Bryan Campoas Madrid, 18; Kenjie Igaan Mangayen, 19; Orviel Kiwingan Valdez, 22; Crisanto Igaan Gapacan Jr., 19; Hill Limong Padon, 25; and Alvin Lazaro Daniel, 21.

Additionally, the other fatality from the incident was identified as Leonardo Bacuteng Pino, 62, a native of Cagayan Valley.

The initial incident report revealed that a witness reported a suspected gas poisoning inside a tunnel portal late Wednesday evening in Sitio Dontog, Barangay Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet. This immediately prompted an emergency response and retrieval operations by local authorities.

It was around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, when the responding teams retrieved the bodies of all seven individuals from the portal. Unfortunately, all of them were declared dead at the scene.

The Mountain Province PLGU extended its sympathies to the bereaved families, assuring them that the provincial government will provide the necessary support and assistance to the victims’ kin during this difficult time.

“No words can fully ease the pain of losing six promising young men from Banaao alongside an elder. To lose sons, brothers, and community members—most in the dawn of their youth—is an unimaginable tragedy that touches our entire province,” the PLGU wrote in a Facebook post Thursday night.

Investigation of the case is ongoing.
