Sagada, Mt. Province – A possible massive grass fire was averted in Sagada, Mt. Province, on April 16 after a 7-year-old girl took it upon herself to report the incident.

Instead of waiting for adults to act, the child immediately went to the nearest fire station upon seeing flames begin to spread across the grassy slopes of Nangonogan in Sitio Inu-ugo.

Her report reached authorities at a crucial time, when fire responders were already preparing for another separate incident.

Personnel from the Office of the Provincial Fire Marshal in Mt. Province coordinated with the Sagada Fire Station, whose team had just returned from an earlier call.

On the slopes, the fire had started to spread through dry grass. While responders were mobilizing, residents in the area did not remain idle.

Community members quickly organized themselves on the ground, using whatever was available to control the fire’s advance. Some worked to extinguish visible flames, while others cleared sections of grass to prevent further spread.

Photos shared by the Sagada Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) captured a scene of bayanihan, with responders and residents—including young people—working side by side amid light smoke under pine trees.

Through their combined efforts, the fire was contained in a short period, preventing it from reaching nearby vegetation and structures. No casualties or injuries were reported, and the incident was noted as among the fastest-controlled grass fires in the town this year.

Fire officials later underscored the importance of timely reporting, especially in upland communities where distance and accessibility can delay response.

They noted that in grass fire incidents, minutes can determine whether a fire remains manageable or develops into a wider threat.

The BFP-Sagada commended the young girl and the community for their vigilance and unity, stating:

“To the brave young girl, you made the difference. To the i-Nagonogan, you proved that even a small community can do the greatest things. Thank you to every hand that helped stop the fire before it could take more.”
