Pride of Cabagan, Isabela: Lt. Gen. Gumiran becomes the 68th Commanding General of the Philippine Army

CABAGAN, Isabela — Isabela takes pride in the rise of one of its own as Lt. Gen. Donald Mallanao Gumiran, a native of Cabagan, formally assumed command as the 68th Commanding General of the Philippine Army, marking another milestone in a distinguished military career.

Gumiran assumed the Army’s top post during the 68th Philippine Army Change of Command Ceremony at Fort Andres Bonifacio in Taguig City. He succeeded Lt. Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete, who was appointed the 61st Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

The appointment drew congratulations from the Provincial Government of Isabela, led by Governor Rodito T. Albano, with the achievement viewed as a source of pride for Isabela and particularly for Gumiran’s hometown of Cabagan. Governor Albano has described Gumiran’s appointment as a great honor for the province and expressed pride in his military service and record.

A graduate of the Philippine Military Academy “Tanglaw-Diwa” Class of 1992, Gumiran has held a series of key leadership positions throughout his military career. He previously commanded the Western Mindanao Command, 6th Infantry Division, and 602nd Infantry Brigade, and also served in leadership assignments with the 7th Infantry Battalion, 38th Infantry Battalion, and 6th Infantry Division Training School.

He earned a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.

Gumiran’s career has also included assignments focused on peace and security operations. As commander of the 6th Infantry Division, he worked with local government units and other stakeholders in efforts that encouraged members of armed groups to return to the folds of the law. He later served as Western Mindanao Command chief, where he continued to oversee security operations and engage with communities and local authorities.

His journey from Cabagan, Isabela, to the highest leadership position in the Philippine Army represents a source of inspiration for fellow Isabelenos, particularly young people who aspire to serve the country. His rise also highlights how dedication, professional growth, and years of service can lead from a hometown in Northern Luzon to one of the country's most demanding positions of military leadership.

As Army chief, Gumiran now assumes responsibility for leading the Philippine Army in fulfilling its mandate to serve the people and secure the land, while working with other government institutions and communities to promote peace, security, and national defense.
