Tabuk City, Kalinga - Board Member Glenn Julius Amla, on August 5, proposed a measure to help families of deceased indigent constituents by providing construction materials for their tombs.

“Iti panagpaspasyar tayo nu adda natayan, nakita tayo nga ti daduma ket marigatan nga mangitabon ti minatay da gapu ti kinakurang ti materiales, isunga ti barbaryo, ikali da lattan… nu adda mai-provide tapno maitanem ti minatay ti pantyon ket dakkel nga tulong dayta,” explained Amla during the mention of his proposal.

In an interview, the provincial legislator related that while there are forms of assistance and aid for the indigent families of the dead given by the provincial government, they only cover funeral expenses and sometimes not enough.

Amla said that although poverty incidence in Kalinga dropped over the years from 26.6% in 2018 to 6.3% in 2023, the number is not negligible. Further, death mostly comes with no warning, and that holding a funeral and burial is expensive. This, according to Amla, is a burden we can share with the grieving families.

The ordinance entitled “An ordinance authorizing the Provincial Government of Kalinga to provide construction materials for tombs of deceased indigent constituents and appropriating funds therefore” was approved by the legislative body for its first reading.

The details and guidelines for the said ordinance are yet to be deliberated and considered during its second reading. The schedule of which will still be calendared.

“I hope that we can do something tapno maipasa tayo daytoy nga ordinansiya. Para kaniak makatulong met daytoy tapno saan unay madagsenan dagiti kakailyan nga awanan tapno maitabon da ti minatay da iti nasayaat nga maudi nga pakaidulinan,” said Amla.
