Cabbages at P13 per kilo available in Kalinga on Jan. 25

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Efforts to connect Benguet farmers with consumers in Kalinga continue through the KADIWA, or "Katuwang sa Diwa at Gawa para sa Masaganang Ani at Mataas na Kita” program of the Department of Agriculture.

This time, more walk-in customers will be catered to as two metric tons of cabbages and two metric tons of womboks will be delivered in Kalinga this Thursday, January 25.

While small percentages of it are pre-ordered, most of the veggies will be on display at Kalinga Capitol Park to accommodate those who were not able to buy last week.

Said vegetables will be sold at P13 per kilogram, according to Fevelyn Kiley of the DA-Agricultural Program Coordinating Office.

Last week, on January 18, the three metric tons of cabbages were already sold out just an hour after they were displayed by the staff of the Office of Provincial Agriculture.

Consumers flocked to the selling venue not only for its much lower price compared to cabbages being sold in the market but also in support of farmers in Benguet struggling to market their vegetable produce.

According to OPAG-Kalinga, the main purpose of the agency’s KADIWA retailing is to aid Benguet’s farmers facing challenges in marketing their vegetable produce while providing solutions to the high volume of unsold veggies in the province.

Earlier this month, farmers selling their vegetables at much lower prices made rounds on social media due to a lack of buyers at trading centers.

Adding to this issue were reports regarding farmers dumping their veggies after they wilted in trading centers for the same reason.

Meantime, for farmers needing assistance in selling their vegetable produce, they can contact the DA-CAR Agribusiness and Marketing Division at 0966-0811-422.

The agency will help them by connecting them to buyers, facilitating sales, and providing trucking services through the KADIWA on Wheels program.
