Tabuk City, Kalinga― Despite lower demand for power due to quarantine restrictions brought by the CoViD-19 pandemic, National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reminds the public to be energy efficient and cites simple conservation practices to avoid power shortages.

NGCP mentioned that although there is lesser demand, there is still a possible occurrence of power interruptions considering the lean supply of electricity especially in this summer months.

“We encourage everyone to practice efficient energy use not only to save costs on electricity bills, but also to help avert possible power supply shortage particularly during this summer season when the demand is at its highest,” said NGCP Regional Communications and Public Affairs Specialist Maria Lourdes Refuerzo.

“Simple act such as unplugging appliances when not in use and avoiding heavy energy use during peak hours of 2PM and 7PM can make a difference,” she added.

Highest power demand in Luzon predicted to happen in May 2021

Earlier, Department of Energy predicted a peak demand or highest electrical power demand of 11,841 megawatts for Luzon to occur in May 2021, which is 7 percent higher compared to last year’s peak load of 11,103 MW (recorded in March).

Visayas is predicted to have a peak demand of 2,394 MW and Mindanao, 2,098 MW, higher than the peak demand of 2,201 MW and 1,977 MW in 2020, respectively.

Conservation tips

NGCP advises consumers to follow simple conservation practices at home in order to help in avoiding possible power shortages.

- Unplug appliances from outlets when not in use. Appliances on standby mode still consume electricity;

- Use compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) or LED bulbs;

- Keep air conditioners at 25°C. Close doors and windows before opening the air conditioner;

- Regularly clean fan blades and air conditioner filters. Air conditioner condensers must be cleaned every 6 months or earlier, depending on usage;

- Defrost refrigerators when freezer ice reaches ¼ inch. Make sure refrigerator doors are tightly closed; and

- Shift electricity-heavy household duties such as using the washing machine and ironing to off-peak periods (before 11AM and after 7PM).
