Tuguegarao City, Cagayan — The Cagayan Valley Medical Center (CVMC) officially opened the first-ever Brain and Spine Center in Cagayan Valley on May 15 at the CVMC compound in Tuguegarao City, aiming to bring quality and specialized healthcare services closer to people in the region.

According to the Cagayan Provincial Information Office, the center features a three-story building equipped with a 30-bed capacity, two operating room theaters, and advanced diagnostic equipment designed to improve the treatment and management of patients suffering from brain and spinal disorders, including stroke and other neurological conditions.

The facility is also equipped with modern medical technologies such as an operating microscope, high-speed craniotomy drill, neuro-endoscopy tower, ultrasonic aspirator system, electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyography (EMG), transcranial Doppler, and brain monitoring systems.

In an interview with Radio Television Malacañang (RTVM), CVMC Medical Specialist II Dr. Albert Robin Zuñaga said the facility is the first specialized center of its kind in Region 2 and is expected to serve not only Cagayan Valley but also nearby provinces.

He added that the center is also envisioned to become a training and research hub for neurological and spine care in Northern Luzon.

“Since kauna-unahan siya dito sa Region 2, ang aim namin is maging referral center siya dito sa buong region. Hindi lang buong Region 2 kundi pati mga karatig-probinsya like Kalinga at Apayao. Nais rin naming maging center ito for training at research sa buong region,” said Zuñaga.

During the inauguration, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the government aims to establish 349 specialty centers nationwide by 2028 as part of efforts to expand access to quality and modern healthcare services across the country.

Meanwhile, following the inauguration, a groundbreaking ceremony was also held for the planned Heart, Lung, Renal, and Kidney Transplant Center as part of the continuing expansion of specialized healthcare services in the region.
