Baguio City, Philippines – A King Cobra, one of South East Asia’s endangered species and world’s largest venomous species of snake was caught on Thursday, September 30, 2021, inside a house in Barangay Loakan Proper, Baguio City by the police.

According to Northern Exotics and Wildlife Troopers (NEWT), a non-government organization focused on the conservation of the native wildlife in the Philippines and advocates for responsible pet keeping, they were contacted by Nimrod Boleyley and were asked to help catch a cobra in the area, in which they immediately responded.

NEWT narrated that while on their way, they were already told that PNP personnel from Baguio City Police Office - Station 4 had already taken the snake.

They then headed to the police station and after assessing the snake under dim lights, NEWT troopers found out that it was a juvenile King cobra and not a Philippine cobra, which they expected at first.

Representative of NEWT disclosed that the snake is a juvenile King cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), an endangered species of snakes found in South East Asia.

Surprised by the finding, they commended the barangay officials and police officers for prioritizing the snake’s welfare instead of killing it.

In an update by NEWT, the snake named "Quatro" by the officers of BCPO-station 4 is now at the care of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera after its veterinary check-up.

“May facility po sila [DENR-CAR] for holding. If not, is nag-assist na po kami to care for it before releasing po,” a personnel of the NEWT said, adding that if they are to release it, it would be somewhere far from residential areas.

“Pero since endangered species, baka dadalhin po sa main sanctuary sa Quezon City,” the personnel said.
