TABUK CITY, Kalinga – Governor James S. Edduba reaffirmed the provincial government's firm commitment to ensuring that every child in Kalinga diagnosed through newborn screening receives continuous, comprehensive, and accessible medical care, regardless of their condition.

Edduba made the statement during the launching of the Newborn Screening Satellite Continuity Clinic (NBSSC) at the Kalinga Provincial Hospital (KPH) in Bulanao, Tabuk City, on Tuesday, May 26.

The clinic is expected to further strengthen the province’s healthcare system by providing sustained medical support and long-term intervention for newborns with health conditions identified through early screening.

In his message during the launching, Edduba underscored the importance of establishing systems that ensure continuity of care, where children diagnosed at birth are consistently monitored and supported through appropriate medical services available within the province.

“The establishment of this clinic is extremely significant. Through this clinic, babies diagnosed through newborn screening will now have access to continuous medical management, developmental monitoring, dietary counseling, and specialized care closer to home. More importantly, it ensures that no child will be left behind or forgotten in the process of treatment and recovery,” Edduba said.

The governor emphasized that early detection is critical, noting that some medical conditions do not immediately manifest symptoms at birth but may develop into serious disabilities or even lead to death if left untreated.

“We recognize that early detection saves lives. Many disorders identified through newborn screening may not show symptoms at birth, yet if left untreated, they can lead to severe disabilities or even loss of life,” he added.

Edduba also acknowledged the challenges faced by many families in the province’s far-flung communities, who often have to travel long distances to access specialized medical care.

He said the establishment of the clinic brings hope and relief to these families.

“Instead of traveling long distances to major urban centers for consultations and treatment, they can now access specialized services nearer to their communities. This means reduced financial burden, easier access to care, and greater peace of mind for parents,” he said.

Edduba then reiterated his administration’s dedication to enhancing maternal and child healthcare programs, saying, “As your provincial government, we remain committed to supporting programs that prioritize maternal and child health. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to grow and reach their fullest potential regardless of their condition at birth.”

The governor concluded by expressing his gratitude to healthcare professionals, partner agencies, and stakeholders who contributed to the establishment of the clinic, emphasizing that collaborative efforts are essential in improving health outcomes for Kalinga’s children.
