Tabuk City, Kalinga – Governor Ferdinand Tubban is elated with the establishment of Gimpong Radio, saying the province will now have a radio station catering to the indigenous people of Kalinga to help promote the people’s culture, tradition, and music.

The radio station is situated at Talama, Tabuk City on top of a mountain overlooking the city and the Chico River.

Governor Tubban was speaking to hundreds of attendees during the inauguration and blessing of the station on Wednesday, December 8, when he underscored the need for community radio with such advocacy.

According to the governor, since it is now the time of the information age and information-driven governance, having more media channels to cater to various groups of audiences within the locality.

He added that the Kalinga community now expects that the station will serve as a means to introduce the province to those who heard very few or have known little about the province.

Radio still one of the most power mediums

Tubban further stated that radio, particularly in the Cordillera is still one of the most powerful mediums as people still mostly prefer listening to viewing while on farms or doing chores at home, adding that this type of media is still the most intimate and socially personal medium in the world.

“It could be one of the instruments to strengthen cultural belongingness and raise awareness of our cultural identity. It can also be a means to educate not only our children but neighboring friends and visitors of our way of life and destinations they can visit in the lowlands and the mountain areas,” the governor added.

A new station is a sign of progress and development in the local media industry

Meantime, the governor acknowledged that the addition of Gimpong Radio to the two terrestrial radios and one online radio station in Kalinga signifies progress and development in the media industry. He said this radio can add to more ways for the people to be more-informed individuals.

“New needs, as we know, need new techniques. And thus, we keep finding new means and new ways to keep up with the fast-changing world and the media landscape that feed us our daily information meals. This, if tapped and supported, can help grow a knowledge-based community of people. With better knowledge comes better decision making and therefore better lives,” Tubban said.

Governor Tubban commended all the people behind the establishment of Gimpong radio station, saying that apart from offering a new set of programs, the radio will provide employment for homegrown media graduates.

“I believe that Gimpong Radio shall be able to sustain programs and produce various quality media contents and materials to paint the face of the province as a conglomeration of multiple sub-tribes with sometimes unique and varying culture, but the challenge for Gimpong Radio could be how it can continuously evolve into an outward-looking radio station without losing its indigenous identity,” he concluded.
