Heard of KITE FIGHTING? Sta. Marcela, Apayao has it

Sta. Marcela, Apayao - The Apayao Tourism Office recently organized the much-awaited kite flying and kite fighting event last May 5, 2023 held at Tacang Swip, Sta. Marcela.


Providing entertainment and excitement for both kite enthusiasts and locals, said event also aimed to promote the province's unique culture and the beauty of the newest family-friendly tourist destination in Sta. Marcela, the Tacang Swip.


The Provincial Tourism Services Office (PTSO) was thrilled to see a large turnout of participants, both young and old, who were eager to showcase their kite-flying skills. The participants came from different parts of the province, making the event a true celebration of Apayao's rich culture and tradition of kite flying.

Started with a stunning display of kites of all shapes and sizes, filling the sky with vibrant colors, the participants took turns to fly their kites as high as possible, showcasing various tricks and stunts that amazed the judges and spectators.


After the kite flying contest was the kite fighting competition, which drew cheers from the crowd. The participants had to maneuver their kites to attack and take down their opponents' kites.


The judges evaluated the contestants based on their ability to perform aerial maneuvers, control the kite, and take down their opponents' kites.


The event was judged and assessed based on various criteria such as kite stability, height, performance, and aesthetics. The judges also evaluated the contestants' ability to perform tricks and stunts while flying their kites.


After an intense aerial battle and skills demonstration in maneuvering, the winners were announced.


John Lloyd Biteng took the first prize in the kite flying contest. Behind Biteng were Cristel Denus and Catherine Agustin, who took the second and third spots respectively.


On the other hand, Jon Milles Sison won the aerial supremacy and took home the title as the best kite fighter under the thread category. Jon-jon Atiga came in second, while Jerwin John De San Jose took the third spot.


For nylon, it was the Jesalvas who dominated the said category as Amado, Marvin, and Nestor took the top three spots.


Aside from promoting Apayao's kite-flying culture, the event was also an opportunity to showcase the beauty of Tacang Swip, which served as a picturesque backdrop to the kite-flying competition.

Provincial Tourism Officer Rebecca T. Mamba was pleased with the turnout and the success of the event, and she expressed her gratitude to everyone who participated and supported the said competition. She likewise hoped that this event will become an annual tradition, attracting more tourists to the area, and promoting the province's unique culture and beauty.


Meanwhile, Sta. Marcela Mayor Evelyn Martinez in her message, also added that event was not only a source of entertainment and excitement, but it was also a celebration of Apayao's rich culture and tradition.


Mayor Martinez likewise informed that the kite flying and kite fighting competitions will again be held in June as part of the founding anniversary and Balangkoy Festival celebration in Sta. Marcela.
