Tabuk City, Kalinga – The life of a young and newly-graduated scout ranger from Kalinga was cut short after he was killed in an armed clash with suspected members of the New People’s Army in Occidental Mindoro on Sunday, March 29.

According to the 2nd Infantry Division, iKalinga soldier, Capt. Dean Oyando, was leading the troops of the 68th Infantry Battalion in a pursuit operation in Sitio Salafay in Barangay Monteclaro, San Jose when they encountered at least 15 NPA members.

This resulted into a 20-minute gunfight which unfortunately caused Oyando fatal injuries.

2nd Division Public Affairs Office Chief, Colonel Michael Aquino, in a statement, paid tribute to the fallen iKalinga soldier, honoring his courage and dedication to serve his country and countrymen.

“1st Lieutenant Dean Oyando embodied the courage and dedication of the Filipino soldier. His ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of peace strengthens our resolve to continue the mission he bravely carried out—to protect our communities and secure lasting peace in our area of responsibility,” he was quoted saying.

Meantime, two other soldiers were wounded in the encounter and was brought to the AFP Medical Center for medical treatment.
