Tabuk City, Kalinga – Not waiting for fabrics copying Kalinga woven designs to enter the province before taking action, Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative Michael Karel Sugguiyao initiated to legislate the protection of Kalinga weave designs.

Through Resolution No. 2021 – 105, Sugguiyao prompted the protection against counterfeit fabrics copying known Kalinga weave patterns and designs coming into the local market from abroad. He also urged to further strengthen the registration of intellectual property rights and cultural heritage of Indigenous Peoples.

This resolution has been approved by the members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan during their regular session this June 15.

“Sakbay nga umay, ag-action tayon”

In an interview, Sugguiyao said that there are fabrics with the local designs that entered in the local market in the Philippines early this year. To date, he said, there has not been any report of counterfeit products yet that arrived in Kalinga.

However, he mentioned that before it arrives, there should have been necessary action already to protect the indigenous craft.

“Sakbay nga umay, ag-action tayon,” he said.

Meanwhile, these fabrics were reported to be machine-made replicas which is being sold cheaply and have duped many customers. This February, Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda through House Resolution No. 1549 sought probe into the sale of counterfeit Cordillera woven products from China which is being sold in the local markets.
