Tabuk City, Kalinga – The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Kalinga, headed by Vice Governor Dave Odiem, is set to craft a resolution declaring Barangay Bantay in Tabuk City as the “Fruit Basket Capital of the Province.”

Barangay Bantay has long been known for its thriving fruit industry, producing crops such as rambutan, lanzones, and dragon fruit, making it one of the key agricultural areas in the province.

In line with this, the barangay council submitted Resolution No. 1, series of 2026, to the Provincial Board, requesting the provincial government to pass a resolution or ordinance formally recognizing the barangay as a major fruit-producing area and declaring it the Fruit Basket Capital of Kalinga.

The council also requested funding support for the barangay’s annual Prutas Festival.

The proposal was reviewed by the Committee on Rules and Ethics, chaired by Board Member Christopher Donaal, and the Committee on Health and Sanitation, chaired by Board Member Alfredo Dangani.

Based on Joint Committee Report No. 04, series of 2026, obtained by Guru Press Cordillera, the committees noted that “local festivals are encouraged as tools for cultural promotion and tourism development.”

Following the findings, the committees recommended approval of the request. However, it was emphasized that while the declaration may be granted, the expenses for the annual Prutas Festival should be shouldered by the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU).

During the Provincial Board session on Tuesday, May 5, the matter was further deliberated, with board members and the presiding officer unanimously agreeing to proceed with the drafting of a provincial resolution for the declaration.
