Over 43,000 affected by Typhoon Egay in Cordillera

Baguio City, Philippines – The number of individuals affected by Typhon Egay has reached a total of 43,310 in Cordillera, the Department of Social Welfare and Development in the region reported.


In its 6 PM update Thursday, July 27, the agency said this is equivalent to 13,367 families residing in 254 villages.


The Province of Abra has the highest number of people affected by the typhoon with at least 40,207 or 12,247 families followed by Apayao with 1,853 or 543 families; Benguet with 775 or 188 families; Kalinga with 511 or 127 families; Baguio City with 446 or 95 families; Mt. Province with 425 or 145 families; and Ifugao with 93 or 22 families.

Of the total affected families, 313 families or 1,063 individuals are situated in evacuation centers, while 422 families or 1,583 people are either being aided outside or taking shelter with friends and relatives.


Meanwhile, 208 houses were partially damaged, while 6 were totally wrecked.


The number of deaths and injuries are yet to be verified but reports stated five were confirmed dead in Baguio and Benguet. One man also died from a landslide caused by the typhoon in Mt. Province.


In Apayao, authorities are searching for 6 individuals who might have been buried in a massive landslide at Sitio Lubong, Calanasan.


DSWD-CAR has so far distributed almost half a million worth of aid and assured continued delivery of assistance.
